Currently, annual archaeological campaigns are carried out, consisting of surface surveys of the land and excavations led and financed by the Museum of Prehistory of Valencia. The digs take place mainly in the summer months. Since 2008, excavations have been underway next to the Western gate.
Archaeological surveys and excavations are the main methods used to obtain documentation on a period of the past, either remote or recent. The aim is to gather together as much information as possible on the material conditions of the past, in order to add to the body of historical knowledge. This method is applicable to any period and context, from a shelter occupied by Neanderthals to a medieval irrigation system or to a trench from the Spanish Civil War. For periods when there is no written documentation, archaeology is the only means available to us in our attempts to construct historical knowledge.
